Saturday, May 2nd Jean_Calvert_Flat_Rock_Music_Festival

Jean Calvert and Company

Calvert and Company is a Greenville-based jazz and blues band featuring vocalist Jean Calvert doing standards from both genres.  She lived in New York City from 1977 until 1991.  There she saw and studied living legends up-close in small jazz clubs, and actually performed at a couple of restaurants before returning to her native South Carolina to live and work. Calvert's voice has been compared to Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, June Christy, and contemporarily to Diana Krall and Jane Monheit.  She can be swingingly hot or sultry-cool.  Having begun performing at the age of 3, Calvert is a well-seasoned singer with an extensive and diverse repertoire because of her background in church music, school chorus music, folk music on solo guitar, country music, R&B, as well as jazz and blues.

Saturday, June 6 Chuck_Brodsky

Chuck Brodsky

Chuck Brodsky “is a man of many talents. He is a skilled guitarist, a poet, and a stand-up comedian. But perhaps most importantly, he is a gifted storyteller who is able to transform ordinary life experiences into great musical events.  Armed with an acoustic guitar, Brodsky charms audiences from the US to Ireland with witty spoken intros and colorful lyrics.  He introduces listeners to a whole cast of characters from baseball heroes to migrant fruit pickers.  His tales of hope and grace offer a refreshing look at the simpler side of life in America.”

Brodsky performs in the classic American folk tradition, listing influences from Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, John Hartford and Mark Twain.  CDs will be available at the concert.

Saturday, Sept 5th

Angela Easterling Black Top Road

Angela Easterling

Angela Easterling was raised in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Much of her childhood was spent on the farm that has been in her family since 1791, seven generations.  A performer all her life, Angela began playing guitar and writing songs while studying at Emerson College in Boston. More and more her music returned to the place her heart called home.

Easterling’s songs run the range of emotions of a woman fully assessing her family’s past and present with a new life perspective, juxtaposing the personal with outside forces.  “As much as I love writing, a song doesn’t seem real until you have shared it with others. Then it takes on a life of its own and doesn’t belong to me anymore, it belongs to everyone. I feel so blessed and fortunate to be able to make my way through the world by sharing my music and my stories.” Angela embraced her heritage in a big way as a writer and an artist on her debut album, "Earning Her Wings", chosen as "Americana Pick of the Year" by Smart Choice Music.  Her newly released CD "Black Top Road" produced by Will Kimbrough is receiving wide recognition on the country/folk/alternative music horizon. Her CDs will be available at the concert.  For more info on Angela see:  http://www.myspace.com/easterling .
